The Israeli embassy is very close to our apartment in Vienna. The block is guarded on both ends with security guards and railroad crossing type gates, preventing any uninvited visitors. Right outside one of those gates is a water cover from 1980. After gauging the situation, I assumed it’d be fine for me to make a rubbing there. Guess again. After about one minute, the armored security guard came to tell me that my activities were out of line. I quickly wrapped up, and thanked the gruff guard, flashing my completed piece. Despite our more-exciting-than-usual encounter, Julian suggested I ask him for a photo for this website, he graciously got off the phone (with his dad) and agreed.
