This is the first example I’ve found from the nineteen teens. Amazingly, from 1914, the year that WWI began. We’ve been noticing that there can be multiple designs for the same year. It seems that round covers only began to be used when streets were paved with asphalt. In areas with cobble stones, square covers are more prevalent. Also, we’ve observed that, even after a sidewalk repaving project has taken place, they reuse the same covers. In our neighborhood, they reinstalled a 1894 cover after just such a project last week.
