Julian has been a crucial part of bringing this project together. Taking a picture of the address, the cover, and the finished rubbing is sometimes quite a task – with pencils rolling all over the ground, trying to avoid baby carriages and dog poop, unwinding masking tape, etc… While it’s easy to match the rubbing to the cover, the addresses sometimes get lost in the shuffle (as just happened with 1974, unfortunately, when I didn’t have J with me.) He’s been incredibly supportive of my work, and also become especially interested in documenting instances where the covers have been replaced intact, despite sidewalk construction. Here is an example.
